As soon as you find out you’re pregnant, your whole world changes. It may seem like the last thing on your mind, but finding a newborn photographer is an incredibly important part of documenting your journey with your child! There are so many things to consider, you may be wondering where exactly to start, and that’s where I come in. I want to give you my tips and advice, so that when you choose your newborn photographer you are confident and happy.
The setting of your session should be one of the first things to think about. Do you want a fresh-48 session done in the hospital after the birth of your child; do you want an in-home session; or do you want a studio session? These are all questions you need to be asking yourself! After the setting is chosen, decide which style you’d like. For example, I do baby-led sessions, meaning your little one can be their sleepy, swaddled selves while we work around them. I avoid extra and over-the-top props and lighting, because it can add stress to your baby.
Another key aspect to make sure to inquire about is how many clients does the photographer take monthly. In newborn photography, sometimes life is unpredictable– babies can be early or late! Make sure you choose to work with someone who understands this fully. For instance, I make sure only to book a select number of newborn sessions per month, so that if your baby is on their own time, we can absolutely work around it with ease.
As a full-service photographer, I love to pamper new mamas! You get to come into my studio in your comfy clothes and have my hair and makeup team do their best work, and get a gorgeous dress from my studio wardrobe. For other photographers, you have to get yourself ready before you even head out the door, so it all depends on the services that are most important to you!
First things first, when is the best time to book a newborn photographer? My advice is to book your session in advance, so somewhere in the first trimester. I know that seems far away, but I promise you, your due date comes quicker than you realize! I book with expectant mamas and lock in their session, but give a little wiggle room for early or late arrivals, because life happens!
Be sure you speak with your photographer before your session so that you know what to expect beforehand. You should go into your session calm and excited, knowing exactly what the session is going to entail. I have an FAQ page on my website to put all new mamas at ease and answer all their questions, although of course we can chat any time! Having open communication with your photographer is key, no matter what.
Scheduling is the final component to consider once you have chosen and booked a photographer. I love to recommend newborn sessions within the first 14 days and up to three months after your child is born. The younger they are, the sleepier they’ll be! Sleeping newborn photos are classic and timeless, and it’s wonderful to be able to snuggle your snoozing newborn throughout the whole session. Of course, no matter what, you want to be able to look back at just how small your child was, and all their little rolls and sleepy smiles.
As any mama or expectant mama knows, there are so many things to consider throughout your pregnancy. Newborn photography may seem far away, but it’s best to start booking early! I hope with these tips the process for you seems easier for you! Of course, if you’re looking for a fine art maternity photographer in the Palm Beach County area, let’s get in touch!
