If you’ve never worked with a Palm Beach photographer to capture your precious family memories, you might be wondering how to get you and your family ready before session day. I know how important it is to photograph your littles while they’re still little! Children grow up way too fast, and you need to document these moments so you can look back on them when they’re all grown up. When it comes time for your session, I want you to feel relaxed and excited, not anxious and nervous! Here are some tips on preparing for our session.
This might seem like a no-brainer, but trust between a photographer and the family they’re working with is key to the whole process. Throughout the booking experience, hopefully your photographer has put your concerns at ease and you’re on the same page. Styling, setting, gentle guidance or direction- all of these things are some of the ways you can collaborate with your photographer. Building trust leading up to the session itself is the first step to set yourself up for a gorgeous session, and maybe even a lasting relationship with your photographer!
I’ve written previously about questions for your photographer, so I recommend looking that over before your session as well! Another good blog post to check out is navigating a family session if you have a shy or nervous child. It’s so important to make sure your littles know what to expect going into a session, and I know it can be stressful for them. I make things as seamless and calm as possible, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare for any situation! I recommend bringing a go-bag with extra clothes, toys, snacks (that won’t make mess or stain!), and anything else you could think of in a snap.
To expand on my previous point, you need to come into the session with the correct expectations. Kids will be kids, and that’s okay! Try not to get frustrated or frazzled, turn things into a game or even let them lead if they need to. My studio has a garden space which is perfect for a change of environment if anyone starts to get overwhelmed. Another thing I love to remind all mamas: motherhood is chaotic! Lean into that, and be your genuine selves! You want to look back and marvel at your little ones playing and being authentic, not stiffly posing in clothes that are too tight.
Are you opting for a studio session, or an at-home session? I have a beautiful studio in downtown Palm Beach that has a garden area to get the best of both worlds. At-home sessions are so special because you’re having portraits done in the space you live your lives together. With that, though, comes potential obstacles. Does every room get enough lighting? Are you going to be stressed about cleaning beforehand? These are just a couple of things to consider before making your decision of where to have your session.
This comes down to choosing for how you want to cherish these timeless memories of your family. Does your photographer offer heirloom albums or custom gallery walls? One of the best things about choosing to work with a professional Palm Beach photographer is that your memories won’t sit on your desktop, untouched for years. You can have these fine images become staples in your home, pieces of art that reflect the love that exists in your family. Before your session, make sure you know what you want to do with the photos after they’re edited!
