As a mother and a West Palm photographer, I know that sometimes our lives seem to be too hectic to tell one day from the next. Among all mad dashes, early mornings and late nights, there’s little time to find stillness for yourself. To say motherhood is overwhelming feels like the biggest understatement of the world. I wanted to talk a bit today about something that’s been on my mind lately. The best way to find stillness and yes, even peace, is to lean into all the chaos and commotion. Just like the book “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” that I’m sure so many of us read to our children, the only way forward is to move through it.
This is a strategy I tell so many mothers when we’re getting ready for our session, but it’s also a mantra to get you through your life. On those days where you’re so tired that no amount of caffeine can revive you, and when your kids aren’t getting along? Those are the times to lean in. Slow down and take a breath, take a moment. Look around at the scene in front of you, whatever that may be. I promise you there’s something magical there.
Maybe your son is “painting” the walls, and your daughter is pouring oatmeal on the floor! Despite that, look at the amazing little people you’ve created. They’re curious and funny and mischievous and loud, and the love you have for them is unwavering. In every mistake they make, in every boundary they push, there’s a lesson to be taught and learned. You can take a moment that may otherwise be terrible, and find some joy, no matter what. Get through the moment together, and then laugh about the memory later (much, much later).
To use this strategy for our sessions together, I encourage mothers not to worry about every little thing. I am going to capture all the best, most beautiful moments of your family that you didn’t even notice, despite you living it! I know you want your children to be on their best behavior, but sometimes that’s just not going to happen, and that’s okay. We can work together and move forward seamlessly, letting their imagination run free and letting them guide the next few frames. It’s all about balance, in motherhood and photography. It’s never going to be exactly how you imagine it, but it’s going to be so beautiful all the same.
