When it comes to photography in Florida, fall photos are probably not the first thing that comes to mind. But, giving your family photos a fall vibe or feel isn’t impossible when you live in the Sunshine State! There are some tips that both photographers and families can do to ensure that you have beautiful, seasonal photos to last a lifetime.
Of course, there are some more obvious answers for this one. Fall as a season brings to mind leaves changing colors, pumpkin patches, cooler weather, and Halloween. Leaves changing colors and cooler weather are not really happening in Florida, but we make up for it with fun fall activities that I’ve spoken about in recent posts.
In terms of photography, fall imagery can have a darker editing style, cooler tones, and classic autumnal styling choices. We can easily recreate timeless fall feelings through where the photos are taken and outfit styling! As for giving images a darker edit, I opt for a timeless, fine art style that doesn’t lend well to that; however, darker lighting doesn’t always equal fall. As you’ll see with this session, it still gives a fall feeling even in its lightness.
1 Styling: As a photographer who offers a full client wardrobe (including littles), this is where we can really play up the fall feeling. Opt for classic autumn accent colors, like navy or dark blues, browns, and those beautiful burnt oranges or deep reds. For this session, the family went for pops of blues and oranges mixed with classic creamy tones. It’s still Florida, so the pieces are light and comfortable.
2 Scenery: Where we take the photos are going to be a big influence in providing a fall feel. There are so many outdoor spaces to explore, and my studio garden space can provide a gorgeous backdrop, too. I loved this session and the feeling of the reeds, how they played up that wheat field and pumpkin patch vibe.
3 Timing: When your session plays a huge role. Doing an early morning or evening/sunset session lets us have the chance to play with lighting and shadows. In the middle of the day when the sun is highest, there’s not a lot of room for that. This session was a bit more of a cloudy day, which perfectly plays into the moodiness associated with Autumn.
4 Accessories: I have toys and accessories in my studio to use, but if we’re outside at a location, we can bring along accessories to enhance the fall feeling. In this session, the little one had a wicker basket he carried around, which was so perfect. It looks so similar to a basket you would have if you were in a sprawling field picking apples or bringing back little pumpkins.
As a full-service, luxury photographer who offers framing and heirloom albums, bringing your photos home can seal in the fall feeling. What I mean by this is, when it comes to choosing the framing or custom heirloom albums, lean into the deeper, richer colors associated with Autumn.
For example, your album could have a textured, dark color on the cover to go along with interesting embroidery, and the pages inside can have textured paper similar to typical fall leaves. As for the framing, look at frames in richer shades that really bring out the colors in the styling or the background scenery; make it pop! Your family memories should have a special feeling every time, and if fall is what you’re striving to achieve, we can make that happen.
