Being in front of the camera during a family photography session isn’t always the most comfortable for adults, let alone children. I know that all little ones can feel a little shy sometimes! But, if your child is a little bit more nervous or introverted, I don’t want you to worry. There are some tips and tricks to making your child feel calm, and maybe even excited, come session day.
This doesn’t have to be just a simple reminder, but you can make it fun. Put it on the calendar (if you have a physical calendar) in big, bold letters. Or, create a little count down on a poster board, a fun activity you can do together. Make sure your little one knows this day is all about them, and how much you love them. Your family is their whole world, after all, and you can amp up the excitement around this whole day.
Expanding on that last sentence, make the entire day a fun, family affair. Don’t put all the stress or pressure on the session itself! The last thing we want is for your little one to get too worked up over the photography portion of the day. Let them know that after visiting me in the studio, you’ll all go get ice cream or take a trip to the toy store. My studio is conveniently on Worth Avenue, so you can spend the whole day together there.
This might seem a little silly, but I promise it will ease their nerves. You don’t even need a professional camera, your phone will work just fine! Set up a little area of your house, even your living room, and get them used to the idea. There doesn’t have to be posing, just let them play as they usually would. Have your partner play with your child, too, to make it feel like the real thing! Show them how relaxed and fun the entire process is.
When it comes to the day of, keep the mood light and happy. If your little one gets overwhelmed or nervous once you get to the studio, we can always take a little break! They can explore the taste, explore the toys– whatever they need to understand that there’s nothing to be worried about.
