As an expert in West Palm photography, I understand that sibling sessions can seem overwhelming. When you find out you’re having a second child, one of the first things that comes to your mind is probably “how is my first child going to handle this?” You might worry if they’re going to get along, or maybe if your oldest is going to take some time to warm up to the newborn. These are all natural concerns, and of course the same feelings come up when getting ready for your newborn session. Here are a few tips to calm any nerves and prepare you for your session with your newborn and their sibling.
Whenever there’s a toddler involved in a session, I always recommend bringing along snacks, but especially during a newborn session. Sometimes, they might get to feeling a little shy or insecure that the attention is all on their little sibling. Coaxing them along snacks like goldfish or teddy grahams encourages them to keep participating, without a sugar overload of course. Another tip is to put the treats somewhere near the newborn or in their swaddle and asking the older sibling if they can find the treat! Anything that gets creative is always a great way to go.
Toddlers, or unsure older siblings, will always go for fun and simple games. Ask them if they can smell the baby’s stinky feet– these are the moments where I get to capture the oldest reaching for the newborn with a sneaky smile on their face! Another option is to ask them to help hold the baby with their strong muscles in a shot where they’re standing on a stool (and the baby is firmly held by mom or dad).
As I said, sometimes toddlers and older siblings will get cranky if they feel like they’re not getting enough attention. Always make sure to check in with them throughout the session and include them in all the moments you can. Reassure them and make sure they know just how much they are loved, and how important they are with their help.
Mom and dad photos are always necessary. Yes, this is a newborn session, but your children get to have special spotlight moments with both parents too. This is a huge time in your family, and this is one of the most magical moments where they get to understand what it means to be siblings.
