As a West Palm newborn photographer and mama, I know that when it comes to designing your nursery, there are so many places to start! Design and aesthetic is a part of motherhood that could be new and intimidating territory, or maybe it’s the part you’ve been looking forward to the most. Either way, I want to offer some tips and advice for where to begin designing your nursery so you create a space your newborn will be peaceful in.
This is arguably the most important part, especially when you’re just getting started. You need to take a step back to be realistic about what you’re working with! Is it close to your bedroom? How is the natural light? Natural light is beautiful and so necessary in a nursery, so always try to use the room with the best light! Another big part is taking stock of the closet space in the room you’re planning to use. Newborns need so much more than you may think, so give yourself plenty of closet space. The layout of the nursery is key for the flow, but also to make sure all you put into the space makes sense. Clutter or disorganization can drastically change the energy to any room, and your newborn deserves the most soothing energy!
After you’ve taken in the realities of your space and chosen a layout, it’s time to settle on a color palette and theme. There are literally endless options for this, but don’t stress! Creating a mood board on Pinterest or saving designs you’re drawn to are wonderful for getting ideas and piecing everything together. For newborns, I find it’s best to stick to light and bright or neutral color palettes. Add pops of color where you want to, of course! If you go with a zoo or animal theme, opt for fun wallpaper or sheets to bring in some different elements that stand out. Other theme options: under the sea, adventure, outer space, desert, mountain, beach, circus, etc. There are endless possibilities, so get creative! Nurture whimsy with your little one from the youngest age you can.
Now that you have the layout, the color palette, and the theme, it’s time to stick to a style. Keep in mind that although this is a nursery, you still want the space to flow with the rest of your home! Whether you prefer modern, traditional, or mid-century modern, choose pieces and bring in elements that reflect those styles. Here’s a useful nursery design style quiz to help you if you feel a little unsure or torn between different styles.
Choosing the decor is the final piece to this puzzle! Check out a previous blog post all about the best baby furniture stores in West Palm Beach to help you get started. With decor, there are (shockingly) a lot of factors to take into consideration. Since it’s for a newborn, it’s so important to choose pieces that are functional and cute! Opt for extra storage in the furniture or decor that you choose, always. For example, doing a safari-themed space? Look for wicker baskets for blankets that are shaped like a specific animal. Keep in mind the design style you chose, as well! When it comes time to bring everything together, layering textures and colors is a great way to go. If you have a fun wallpaper accent wall, put a simple framed print on it, or a simple bookshelf, etc. To bring everything together in the end, opt for some personal finishing touches! Photos from your maternity session, a print of their tiny newborn hands and feet! Anything that brings even more love into the space.
