Maternity photography is, in my opinion, one of the greatest gifts to give yourself. I talk about it all the time, but it is so special to have documented the journey with your child from before they were even a newborn. Maternity sessions can be some of the most powerful and artful photography, and I want you to have the best experience possible. I’ve compiled a little list of the top five things you need to know before your maternity session.
This might seem obvious, but doing your best to stay relaxed and calm is going to get us the best results. If you searched around for a maternity photographer, you know what your style is and what you’re looking for once you’ve booked someone! There’s no need to be nervous, because your photographer should have already walked you through the entire process. I know that with my clients, I like to get to know them before our session so that I’m not a total stranger to you– photography is all about the connection between the photographer and the subject!
Maternity photos are very intimate and personal. Sometimes, a mama may just want the session experience to be all about her and the relationship she’s making with her little one. Other times, couples can use maternity sessions to reconnect and fall a little bit more in love with each other. It’s wonderful to savor the time before your baby comes when it’s just the two of you. The same goes for deciding whether or not you’d like your other littles to be involved in the session. No matter what you end up choosing, be confident in your decision! These photos are for you and your little one to love and cherish, so make sure you’re having the session done in the way you truly want.
This can be a little backpack or purse filled with items you may need… just in case! This could be just about anything, from ibuprofen to lip gloss to snacks, or extra undergarments or your favorite setting powder for touch ups on the go. Either way, having a bag filled with spare items that could come in handy in any situation is just another way to put yourself at ease. I definitely recommend this trick– as a mama and photographer, I know it is never silly to be over prepared!
Make sure to reach out to your favorite photographer as early as possible to make sure they are available. The earlier the better! I recommend scheduling your maternity photography session in the third trimester (28-32 weeks), so that your bump is showing fully. We want to accentuate the baby bump and highlight it throughout the session!
A week or two before your session, go out and treat yourself! You deserve all the self-love and kindness, mama. Get a prenatal massage, get a manicure and pedicure, and get a facial; whatever you know will make you feel like your very best self, go for it. West Palm Beach has some incredible spas to explore, so take your time and find the right one for you. If you do opt for a facial, stick to something that is moisturizing and calmly rejuvenating. We have to avoid certain skincare products throughout pregnancy anyway, so make sure your esthetician has baby-safe products for your skin.
The most important thing on the day of your maternity session is you. You deserve to celebrate yourself and your body for growing your little one all these months, mama. Go into your session with peace of mind and with confidence, and you’ll love the final result.
